The media is so fun to watch today.  GM announced that the Chevy Volt is capable of 230 MPG using the new EPA methodology for plug-in vehicles.  The Volt when fully powered up is capable of approximately 40 miles on the fully charged batteries installed in the vehicle before falling back on the gasoline engine.   The total range expected on the highway is around 300 miles before needing to refuel.  The starting price for the car will be at $4o,000.

While it is nice to see GM finally coming out with a truly fuel efficient vehicle.  I don’t see how they can compete with the Hybrids from Toyota and Honda, especially at that price point.  Or for that matter the upcoming sedan that will be coming out from Tesla. The Model S which has a 300 Mile range, fully Electric, and runs around $50,000.  If I am going to spend 40k for a vehicle, I would rather spend the extra 10k and obtain a fully electric vehicle.  I know we still don’t have all the details on the Vehicle yet, but unless it is a clear home run, exceptional build etc.  I just don’t think this will be the game changer that GM needs to return to favor as the worlds leader in autos.
