How often do we see Science Fiction become reality now-a-days?  Star Trek has been one of the Science Fiction shows that has influenced the way that we think over time.  We have communicators, Computers (while not as advanced certainly given time will be very similar to Star Trek), Phasers (Lasers and similar weapons), Quantum Communication, optical storage, and so much more!  And now we have Transparent Aluminum which for those who remember Star Trek IV – The Voyage Home, this is what Scotty had them build to contain the water for the Whales that they were going to transport back to the future.  Science Fiction I believe acts very much as a driver for us all, or rather at least a direction that we want to go as the Human Race.  And while I enjoy some of the darker Science Fiction out there, I also really enjoy Star Trek for its positive view of human growth through the universe.  I don’t in anyway think that moving into space is going to be easy, but as I have stated before, we need to move in this direction to ensure our ability to survive as the human race.

Transparent aluminum is ‘new state of matter’
