University of Liverpool and the American Car Maker FORD have been working together to come up with two ways to incorporate lasers as replacements for spark plugs.  One way that has proven to work, uses diode lasers as replacements for the plugs themselves.  This would require a similar number of lasers as cylinders, which would be costly.  They want to use one laser that fires through optical fiber to the cylinder.   This would reduce costs, and make it easier to service.  Currently, they are having problems due to vibration with this particular procedure.   but. the believe that they can have this resolved soon, and we can expect the improvements to efficiency and power for the engine to show up soon.  No Date given of course, but the idea makes sense.

New way to get that vital spark – University of Liverpool
