One of my favorite sites, Ars Technica has a great article on a report from the National Academies of Science. Keeping in mind the report is all about pushing wind power technology and use to its maximum. And due to this, some of the results would be and should be considered unlikely. Still, looking at the NAS information presented on Ars, I have to say it looks pretty good. The authors of the report take the total land mass size and eliminate certain areas, like those covered in permanent ice, forests and densely populated areas. This along with wind turbines that could be placed along the shoreline they finally come up with the 23x current usage value.
Ultimately the plan is not to be taken as fact, more as one possible outcome if we should push forward with Wind Power Generation. Still pretty interesting, and this combined with Solar technology that is improving as well. We could finally see the end of our energy dependence on the middle east.
